One of the clinic’s founders, Dr. John Phillips, worked outside on the lawn caring for victims along with the rest of the surviving staff. Unfortunately, that evening, he collapsed and died in his apartment, despite efforts by another founder of the clinic to save him. Some heroes of the clinic fire are names lost to history. One witness told local press about a young man who, while standing beside him, decided to enter the building to pull out victims after recognizing the dangerous gas.
